Thiruvananthapuram: Here is good news for amateur theatre groups and performers! An open air theatre is all set for a grand opening in the capital city near Government Guest House, Vazhuthakaud. An initiative of Soorya Stage and Film Society, the new venue named Ganesham will provide all facilities required for staging plays, absolutely free of cost. There are no charges for the properties that are essential for stage arrangements, while the members of the group can stay at night at Ganesham. Soorya Krishnamoorthy, the founder-director of Soorya, is at the helm of this initiative. Ganesham is built near to his home.
Amateur groups in the capital city had been grieving over the scarcity of theatres to give vent to their creative aspirations. Besides, the venues currently available in the city demand enormous rent, which these groups are unable to afford. Amateur plays are often creative efforts emerging among peers, who may not have the capacity to make huge monetary investments. They would often find it unfeasible to rent a theatre at huge rates.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy’s latest initiative Ganesham comes as a happy remedy to the woes of amateur performers and groups. Apart from the open air theatre, the performers can freely borrow light and sound equipment, generator plus the diesel it requires, along with 250 chairs for the audience to sit and view. Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister of the state, will officially inaugurate Ganesham Open-air Theatre on 7th July at 5 pm. A mural work of art depicting the birth and life of Ganapathy forms the backdrop of the theatre, which will also be inaugurated on the occasion.
