Google has named its next Android version as Android Nougat, bringing an end to an aggressive campaign by Keralites to get it named as Android Neyyappam.
Google announced on its Snapchat account that the latest version of Android will be known as Android Nougat, The Verge website reported.
Android names its versions after desserts and Nougat is the latest to grab the slot.
“Nougat is a family of confections made with sugar or honey, roasted nuts, whipped egg whites, and sometimes chopped candied fruit. The consistency of nougat is chewy, and it is used in a variety of candy bars and chocolates,” says Wikipedia.
Google had opened an online poll seeking suggestions for the latest version of Android Operating System and Neyyappam was reportedly one of the strong contenders.
Interestingly, the idea of opening a poll was triggered from a question by an Indian college student.
During Google CEO Sundar Pichai's first visit to his home country after taking control of the Internet giant, a student of Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi, had asked Pichai whether the popular mobile operating system Android can be named after an Indian dessert.
A smiling Pichai replied he will ask his mother for suggestions and Google can even go for an online poll to decide the name.
Google then opened the poll online — the only demand they kept was it should start with N.
Neyyappam lovers had also started a website to support the cause #AndroidNeyyappam.
Even Kerala Tourism had started a Twitter campaign for #AndroidNeyyappam. BJP's Kerala unit president Kummanam Rajesekharan had also tweeted supporting the campaign, urging netizens to vote for Neyyappam.
The announcement by Google draws curtains on all these efforts.
