Monsoon is a magical time to explore many states in India, which experience both the fun and fury surrounding the season. Regardless, taking time out to experience a rain-hugged landscape and its unique touristy activities can be a memorable episode in your life, if you also take the right measures to stay safe. Across the country, the season is experienced very differently, apart from common challenges like occasional waterlogging, floods and diseases. In that case, how to plan a monsoon trip in India? Here's how to go about it.
1) Decide the destination that suits you
Typically, the Indian monsoon season in different regions is between June and September. If what you want to see are lush green spots, backwaters or try seasonal treatments, head to Kerala, Maharashtra or Karnataka spots which are on the Western Ghats, or the states of Meghalaya or Assam in the Northeast. If you want to enjoy the rain on a beach go to Goa. If the transformation of a desert into a verdant landscape would charm you, Udaipur and Jaipur in Rajasthan are your best picks. The Himalayan monsoon seasons in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh will be best for those who love trekking and landscapes like waterfalls.

2) An eye on weather forecasts
Nothing is as important as staying updated about weather conditions while travelling to an Indian state during its monsoon season. The usually pretty spots can turn dangerous and barely accommodative, and they can even get closed down out of the blue if there is heavy rainfall. The roads to the area can also worsen if it experiences copious showers. Have contacts of local service providers who can update you on credible weather reports as and when you need it, if you don't want to depend on official weather updates alone.

3) How to dress?
Rain gear, complete with waterproof shoes, quick-dry clothes, raincoats, caps and umbrellas is a must. Do not carry clothes that won't dry quickly. Also, carry enough jackets with you if you can feel cold in no time. In a small bag, make sure you also carry the required medicines including mosquito repellants.
4) Where to stay?
Pick accommodation facilities that do not experience flood-like situations during the rains. Check reviews or even speak to local authorities to see whether your choice of accommodation is trustworthy during adverse weather conditions. See whether they have facilities to connect with urgent emergency facilities like an ambulance, medical support, medicines and first aid, in case of any requirement. Also see whether the place can offer an unlimited supply of clean drinking water and food, electricity and essential services.

5) Be cautious about being adventurous
Pick out the spots to engage in adventure activities carefully. Be aware of the availability or non-availability of safety apparatus and officials, the probability of flash floods or landslides, the credibility of the service providers and access to help if required. Keep contact numbers of local tourism officials handy.
