How far do ten-year-old kids go on cycle? School, tuition centre, maybe as far as the nearest shop, right? Some parents may think twice before letting kids ride on the main road. But introduced to cycling only six months ago, Devamitra, has achieved something girls of her age could only dream of.
On March 17, Puthuppally native Devamitra rode from Kottayam to Alappuzha via Changanassery and back to Kottayam through Kumarakom – covering a total of 100 kilometres in one day. The ride that began at 4.30 am from Devalokam, Kottayam, was completed at 12.30 pm. She was assisted by her father Pramod.
Starting from Kottayam, she enjoyed the serenity of Kuttanad cycling through Changanasseri and reached Alappuzha beach. She returned through Muhamma, Thannermukkam, and Kumarakom.
Pramod, too, is a good cyclist. Devamitra was inspired by her father's love for cycling. Both certify that it is a very good exercise. Devamitra has shown there is no age barrier either. She is a fifth standard student at Kottayam Lourdes Public School. Devamitra is a good roller-skater, too. The passion that began at age 7 continues. She is the daughter of Pramod Madappally Tharayil and Soumyamol. Sister Vedamitra studies in LKG.
