Seethathod: Gavi, one of the top eco-tourism spots in Kerala, is brimming with visitors who throng to enjoy nature in its most majestic form. Known for its incredible biodiversity, the serene woods of Gavi is home to various species of flora and fauna.
The tourists are thrilled to spot wild animals, rare avian species, beautiful butterflies and even the reptiles here. The entrance to this scintillating show of wildlife is at Angamoozhy. Gavi is about 100 kilometres away from the district headquarters. Besides KSRTC services from the Pathanamthitta and Kumily depots, travellers can reach Gavi in private vehicles as well.
The bus service that starts from Pathanathitta at 6.30 in the morning reaches Kumily via Gavi and returns by evening. Meanwhile, the bus that starts from Kumily in the morning reaches Pathanamthitta and returns by 12.30 pm. One could easily enjoy the enchanting beauty of Gavi which is spread over 300 kilometres with just Rs 500 in hands. Those who reach in private vehicles should book their entry in advance on the website of the forest department. Up to 30 private vehicles would be allowed into Gavi in a day.
Off late, the tourists have been able to spot at least 15 different species of wild animals between Kiliyerinjankallu and Gavi. The Indian giant squirrel, the great Indian hornbill, herds of wild elephants, lion tailed macaque, the Nilgiri langur, sambar deer, stripe necked mongoose, male sambar deer with antlers, wild skunks, male and female peacocks and lots of birds and butterflies are spotted by the tourists.
