Thiruvananthapuram: The funeral of Kavalam Narayana Panicker, the veteran stage director who simplified the nuances of theatre, will be held on Tuesday.
His body was brought to his ancestral home in Chala on Tuesday morning for the public and relatives to pay homage. The last rites will be held at his home 'Sreehari' at Kavalam in Alappuzha district on Tuesday evening, with full state honors.
Meanwhile, the state paid rich tributes to Kavalam, who passed away late on Sunday night after suffering from age-related sickness.
In his condolence message, state governor justice (retd) P. Sathsivam said Kavalam's death was a great loss to the Indian art and cultural arena.
"With an unparalleled insight into Indian classical and folk traditions, Kavalam retold the classics through the native idiom, thus rendering a new expression to theatre and poetry. As an authority on many aspects of folk tradition, he had inspired artistes and academics alike," he said.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the theatre doyen as one who was always willing to experiment in his field. He said Kavalam would always be remembered for his unique contributions in drama and poetry.
"His passing away is going to create big void in the fields that he excelled and is going to be an irreparable loss to Kerala," Pinarayi said.
Veteran Marxist leader V.S. Achutanandan and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala were among the others who offered their tributes to Kavalam.
