The budget had a sweet surprise for journalist-turned-filmmaker Vidhu Vincent, who hogged headlines after becoming the first woman filmmaker from Kerala to win an award in the International Film Festival of Kerala in December.
On Friday, Vidhu's much-acclaimed film 'Manhole' came to the limelight once again when Kerala finance minister Thomas Isaac mentioned it in his budget speech.
Isaac alluded to Manhole while announcing Rs 10 crore-allocation for automation of manual scavenging.
Thakazhi Sivasankarapillai's classic work 'Thottiyude Makan' also got a mention.
Both Thakazhi and Vidhu, though divided by decades, portrayed the harsh realities in the lives of manual scavengers.
