Sheethal Shyam lauds IFFK accepting transgender as a third category

Transgender activist and actor Sheethal Shyam was very happy after becoming the first one to receive an IFFK pass as the authorities included transgender in third category of gender.

Sheethal feels that migration - the theme of IFFK 2016 - is closely connected to her community as they tend to migrate from the society after being secluded.

“The theme, migration is very meaningful for a transgender like me. The special package titled ‘Gender Bender’ introduced by IFFK is commendable,” said Sheethal Shyam.

Sheethal is also glad for the fact that Kerala is moving forward with renewed thoughts and praised the organizers for including films involving themes like sexuality and gender bias.

“The films in this package are exceptionally well portrayed and explain how a transgender struggles in everyday life,” said Sheethal.

She affirms that being accepted in the society is their right and not something to be given to them one fine day.

“I strongly feel that more discussions and importance should be given by film critics in order to spread awareness among the society”, added Sheethal.
