1. Karnataka cabinet on Wednesday decided to defer till Thursday, a decision on release of 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu .
2. The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered Karnataka to release the water and rebuked it for ignoring the court's earlier directions.
3. Karnataka government said that it has deferred the release of water to wait for the results of a crucial meeting on Thursday called by the Center.
4. The meeting involving both states and the Center was also ordered by the top court to find a political solution for the “impasse”.
5. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said they have no intention to disobey the Supreme Court order and pointed that the water was required for drinking purposes in the state.
6. On September 12, Bengaluru saw violent protests following a Supreme Court order to release 12,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu. Two people were killed and section 144 was imposed in several parts of the state.
7. A British era treaty governs the Cauvery water sharing and it has been the cause of a recurring dispute between the two states.
