New Delhi: In a major setback to Karnataka, the Supreme Court Tuesday ordered that state to release more water from the River Cauvery to neighboring Tamil Nadu.
The apex court asked Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu in 3 days.
The crucial order comes a day after Karnataka said that it cannot release 6,000 cusecs of water daily for a week, as ordered by the Supreme Court on September 21.
The apex court also asked the AG to facilitate a meeting between executive heads of both the states and the Center to resolve Cauvery impasse.
The dispute over the sharing of water in the river had led to rampant violence in Karnataka this month.
The two southern states have been locked in enmity for decades following dispute over the water of the River Cauvery, which originates in Karnataka and flows into Tamil Nadu.
The issue escalated on September 5 as the Supreme Court agreed that for 10 days Tamil Nadu should get more water than it had been receiving to help its farmers.
The Supreme Court will hear the case again Wednesday.
