Kottayam: Booker prize winner Arundhati Roy, whose last book weaved a touching narrative around people who exist on the fringes of society, said that it was a long-awaited desire to be in the midst of destitute children.
She was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the anniversary celebrations of Sandhwanam Charitable Trust here.
The noted writer honoured K P Jaisal, who let women use his back as a step to climb into a rescue boat during the recent floods in the State, and M Surendran Nair, a karate teacher at the trust.
The function was presided over by Fr. James Kalayamkandam of Mudiyoorkara Church.
Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, MLA lauded the efforts of Jaisal, and delivered the key-note address. Sindhu Gopalakrishnan presented a report on the trust.
Sandhwanam Managing Trustee Annie Babu, former MLA Thomas Chazhikadan, Kottayam Medical College Principal Dr Jose Joseph, K E School Principal Fr. James Mullacherry, Fr. Sony Mundunadakkal of Nalpathimala Church, Lions Club Region Chairman Mathew Kollamalakkarottu and Jolly Adimatra spoke on the occasion.
