As a global rescue bid was made to safely evacuate Indian sailor Abhilash Tomy over three days, an Irish sailor whose boat too was caught in inclement weather made an attempt to reach the former.
Gregor McGuckin, 32, was more concerned about Tomy though his own yacht was in danger after its mast crashed in fierce winds on Friday. His own injuries were not serious, and he hadn't send an SOS. What mattered to him was the timely rescue of the injured Indian naval officer whose boat too was badly damaged in the choppy weather in the same part of the Indian Ocean.
Gregor tried to reach Tomy's yacht, setting up a makeshift rig on his boat and using a mixture of wind and engine power. When he told the rescuers that he doesn't need emergency help, they asked him to proceed towards the Indian's yacht if he could.
Gregor's attempt was hard, as his yacht had lost its systems in the storm. However, he managed to get closer to Tomy's location. After Tomy was rescued on Monday by the French ship 'Osiris', the same vessel found the Irishman about 48 km away.
Both Tomy and McGuckin were taking part in the Golden Globe Race.
