Kerala has already cast its vote and fierce battle is being expected in many constituencies. Among the various constituencies, Thrissur stood out for its star candidate who wooed his voters with his charisma and charm. The NDA stunned their political opponents by lodging super star Suresh Gopi from Thrissur.
Though he was the last candidate to enter the poll fray, the screen icon made it up by reaching out to the voters with intense campaigning sessions. As Suresh Gopi ventures into electoral politics for the first time, his son, actor Gokul Suresh opens up about his father’s political ideals and activities.
It is for the first time that Suresh Gopi has ventured into electoral politics. You too actively took part in your father’s campaigning. How was that experience?
We actually got limited period of time for campaigning. Me and my mother went to the places where my father couldn’t go. We had experienced many saddening experiences during that time. It seemed a lobby existed which deliberately tried to quash the good things that my father had done and unnecessarily project other things. They had manipulated the people as they are scared of losing. They campaigned that communalism would be the only thing that would exist if Suresh Gopi is elected. They spread lies that people who believe in other religions would be denied their religious rights.
There are people who even told that defeating my father was as auspicious as taking a pilgrimage to Mecca. We are really saddened by these allegations. The media too gave prominence to issues like his car’s Pondicherry registration. Only two of our vehicles are registered in Pondicherry, the rest are registered in Kerala. Besides, registering a vehicle in Pondicherry is not tantamount to committing murder, right? Many media celebrated this news as if it were a terrorist activity.
What do you have to say about the cyber attack launched against those who supported Suresh Gopi?
It was Biju Menon who faced severe online attack. I checked some of the profiles which attacked him. Most of them are fake profiles. At least a majority of people may have understood that it was just a political gimmick which has been executed by spending loads of money. I openly supported Biju Menon because I believe that it is my duty to support him.
