Dubai: Overspeed and careless driving likely led to the horrifying accident in Dubai that killed 17 people, including eight Keralites, on Thursday, the police have said.
The top part of the bus was sliced off as hit rammed a height barrier placed at the entry point of an arterial road.
As the driver of the speeding bus lost control of the vehicle it entered the track meant for cars and hit the overhead barrier kept at 2.20 metre height. The left top portion of the Oman-registered bus was completely destroyed in the accident that occurred on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
Those sitting on the left side of the bus were killed. There were 31 people on the bus.
The dead are of different nationalities.
The driver in his statement said that he did not see the overhead road sign due to the sun shield. The driver, an Oman native, suffered only minor injuries.
Police personnel and defence personnel were involved in the rescue efforts.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister of State V Muraleedharan have said that efforts are on to bring back the bodies of the deceased.
The CM said NORKA (Department of Non Resident Keralites Affairs) was also following the developments.

The dead Keralites
Ummer of Thalassery and his son Nabil were killed in the accident. Son of P P Muhammed and Asiya, Ummer was a former employee of Abudhabi municipality. Sareena is his wife. Abdullah, Lubna and Amna are his other children/
Another deceased is Vimal from Kottayam. His wife Poornima is the supervisor at the ICDS, Thrissur. Devang is his son.
Deepakumar, who was alo killed in the accident, was from Thiruvananthapuram. S Prabula is his mother.
Deceased Jamaludeen of Thrissur had returned from home only a fortnight ago.
Another victim Kiran John had reached Dubai six months ago after completing BTech.
Vasudev from Thrissur and Rajan Puthiyaurayil were the other Keralites who were killed in the accident.
