#AbhijitBanerjee has been trending on twitter since the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selected Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee as a co-winner of the 2019 Nobel Economics Prize on Monday.
Tweets praising Abhijit and the political significance of his achievement inundated the micro-blogging site.
Congress leaders are rejoicing the achievement as Abhijit had helped the Grand Old Party conceptualise NYAY (Nyuntam Aay Yojana), a scheme it promised in its 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto that offered to increase basic income of India's poorest.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi minced no words to express his happiness. "Abhijit helped conceptualise Nyay that had the power to destroy poverty and boost Indian economy," he tweeted.
Twitterati pointed out that Abhijit was an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, an institution that Sangh Parivar alleges to be the hub of anti-national activities, and the fact that he criticised demonetisation and GST implementation.
Many twitter users took the opportunity to take a dig at Prime Minister Modi's supporters, often referred to as 'Bhakths.'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too congratulated Abhijit on his achievement.
However, many twitter users wondered why the Prime Minister Modi, who is otherwise quick with his tweets, took more than three hours to congratulate Abhijit.
