Kozhikode: The Chevayur Police was given a brief shock on Saturday when an accused in an assault case managed to escape from the station.
Under pressure from all corners, including the Youth Congress that led a protest march to the station, the cops tracked down the accused in just over an hour.
Kodungallur-native Febin Rafi, 26 had slipped out of the Chevayur Police Station after 5.45 pm. He was nabbed from near the Law College campus.
Rafi was one of the two young men arrested from Bengaluru the other day on charges of abusing the young women who had run away from a government-owned children's home at Vellimadukunnu here.
It is understood that the two men were brought to Kozhikode from Bengaluru on Saturday morning. Two of the six young women who had run away from the children's home had accused that the young men had abused them after giving them liquor in Bengaluru.
According to Manorama News, Rafi had managed to escape from the station when the cops had taken him out of the prison for medical examination prior to producing before a magistrate.
It was reported that the accused escaped through the backdoor. The accused had given the cops the slip when they were recording the statement of the six young women at the station.
The police had launched a manhunt with at least two units scanning the locality and they were reportedly assisted by the Law College students in recapturing the accused.
