Kochi: Only registered owners of flats in the four illegal apartment complexes at Maradu in Kochi that are to be demolished following a Supreme Court order will get compensation.
The deemed owners of flats that are still under the names of builders won’t be eligible to get the interim compensation ordered by the Supreme Court.
Those who were handed over property on the basis of contracts are also not eligible.
The Maradu municipality is set to hand over to the state government the list of flat owners who are eligible to get the compensation.
A three-member committee appointed by the Supreme Court to fix the compensation for the affected residents will start their work soon. Environment Department secretary Usha Titus held talks with Justice K Balakrishnan Nair, who is heading the committee.
The other two members of the committee will be appointed soon.
Meanwhile, those who have vacated their flats will be given eviction certificates by the municipality. Municipality officials said that they do not have clear information about some flat owners, whose household goods will be removed by the revenue department if necessary.
Though the evacuation process continued on Friday, most owners have left their flats. However, the shifting of household articles, including furniture and electronic items, is yet to be over.
The Crime Branch team probing the case against the builders held a survey of the flats on Friday.
Fort Kochi sub-collecter Snehil Kumar Singh said that a two-member technical committee will be set up to conduct inspections before the demolition of the buildings. The bids submitted by companies to demolish the flats would be examined by this committee. It will also look into precautions needed to be taken before the demolition.
