Nedumbassery: The Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), formed to function under the state government, will be based in Nedumbassery. A three-storey facility built for foreigners facilitation centre, near Nedumbassery police station, will function as its office.
ATS was formed to monitor terror activities in state and effective pursual of terror-related cases. The squad was formed after intelligence reports said terror attacks in Sri Lanka during Easter this year had Kerala connections. Recruitment for the new squad is ongoing. 35 officials who have done exceptionally well in service will be picked initially.
Administration IG at police headquarters, DIG (security) and DIG (police academy) will pick squad members. A communication to make a list of best performers in the force was sent out earlier. The squad will function under the Crime Branch chief.
An SP will head each of the three sections of the squad – intelligence, investigation and operation.
