Palakkad: The Customs and Excise Department extracted 845 grams of pure gold, worth Rs 27.65 lakh in market, from a liquid concoction which was smuggled to the Tiruchirapalli airport in Tamil Nadu from Sharjah.
It took six hours for the officials to separate pure gold from the liquid concoction, made of gold granules, a special mixture of clay and some chemicals, which was smuggled packed in condoms. The customs has started probe into smuggling of gold through the Tiruchirapalli airport.
The officials are also looking into the statements of Abdul Jaseer and Ajnas, who were arrested in connection with the incident, that gold was smuggled through Tiruchirapalli airport in the past too.
The duo, who were granted bail, were arrested at Kurudikkad near here while they were transporting gold from the airport to Kozhikode.
