Alappuzha: Hours before she was set ablaze by a 33-year-old police officer at Valikunnam near Mavelikkara in Kerala's Alappuzha district, woman civil police officer (CPO) Soumya had spent some cheerful time with school students.
Soumya, a CPO with the Vallikunnam police station, was a hardworking woman. The mother of three was posted at Vallikunnam police station three years ago and had been working there since.
In the forefront of organising students’ police activities, Soumya was the drill inspector of the students’ police at the nearby KKM Government Higher Secondary School.
On Saturday, Soumya was returning after a Public Service Commission exam, when Ajas rammed his car.
He hacked her neck, poured petrol over her and set her ablaze. People rushed to the spot hearing her cries for help. Her burns were so severe that she could not be even taken to the hospital. She died on the spot.
Ajas, who also suffered burns, tried to flee.
However, he was handed over to the police by locals.
Why the brutal murder?
There is no clarity on how, Ajas, who is attached to the Aluva traffic police, was acquainted with Soumya. The reason for the brutal murder was also not known.
As Ajas also suffered burn injuries. Police are yet to question him.
Thirty-three-year-old Ajas was on a medical leave from June 3, according to reports.
