Kozhikode: Congress president Rahul Gandhi is set to visit his Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency on June 7. The party is planning to open offices of the MP in Mukkom in Kozhikode district and Kalpetta in Wayanad district.
Rahul is the new Member of Parliament from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in north Kerala after his massive win in the recently concluded elections.
The constituency spreads over three districts - Malappuram, Wayanad and Kozhikode.
The constituency visit could be the first public appearance of the Congress chief outside Delhi after his Thursday's presence at the oath-taking ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi held at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the senior leaders from the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala have been called on June 1 at Kondotty in Malappuram district.
Congress and IUML leaders are expected to attend the meeting in Kondotty, said Wayanad DCC president IC Balakrishnan.
On Rahul's visit, sources in the party, said he is expected to arrive at Calicut International Airport, Karipur, on June 7 and move to three Assembly constituencies in Malappuram - Nilambur, Eranad and Wandoor, and move to Thiruvambady in Kozhikode district. He will reach Kalpetta on Friday night for stay and visit the constituencies in Wayanad, before boarding his flight from Kannur airport on June 8.
The new MP is expected to take part in road shows in all the seven Assembly constituencies that comprise the Lok Sabha seat.
It is not known yet when the party would take a call on Rahul's decision to resign as the party chief in the wake of the party's loss to BJP in the polls.
On June 1, all the 52 MP elects have been asked to meet in New Delhi for a parliamentary committee meeting where decisions on the next level of activities will be taken, said Mullappally Ramachandran, the president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).
It is said Rahul's candidature in Wayanad was a factor that helped the UDF win 19 out of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala.
So, keeping his activities here alive would be a strategic move ahead of the local body elections next year as well as the Assembly elections later, the leaders feel.
