Thiruvananthapuram: Many people discard a sari when they no longer prefer to wear it. But this cloth can be put to good use, proves Mohanakumar, who makes 10 carry bags from a single sari. A native of Uliyakkovil in Kollam, Mohanakumar also turns old trousers, shirts and even nighties into bags.
He dabbled in the making of cloth bags as a solution to the plastic menace and to protect the environment. Mohanakumar turns old clothes into pen box and purse too.
Sreerekha, Mohanakumar’s wife, helps him in the initiative.
Recently, ‘Vizhinjam mother port action committee’, a WhatsApp group, conducted a relief camp for the benefit of the flood-affected at Thiruvanvandiyoor School in Chengannur where many people had brought used clothes. Though donors had been told that old clothes would not be accepted, many did not heed to the instruction. To avoid hurting the sentiments of the donors, the materials were accepted and Mohanakumar turned them into carry bags.
Mohanakumar, who runs a shop selling cashew nuts at Pattom here, feels that if the City Corporation and other bodies take up this initiative, it would prove to be a permanent solution to the plastic menace plaguing the capital.
