Pathanamthitta: An expert team has urged the water resources department to repair the Maniyar dam before the northeast monsoon. Though the dam is safe for the time being, its condition can worsen if the damages are not attended to at the earliest, the chief engineer has warned.
The team visited the dam on Saturday and submitted its report to the water resources minister soon after. The minister called for a meeting to review the findings and recommendations.

The dam’s trash rack, which prevents debris from entering, has moved and the protection walls of its bell mouth have collapsed, the review team reported. They wanted the government to restore the shutters and to repair the spillway and the guide wall.
The left guide wall of the spillway has caved in, forming a 20-feet deep pit below it. Boulders have been dislocated from the top of the fourth spillway and are strewn in a 20-square feet area.
The bogie wheels of the third and fourth shutters have been damaged. The retention walls on either side of the river have been damaged, the report added.
The masonry gravity dam on the Kakkattar river is located at Maniyar, Pathanamthitta district.
