Prof PC Varghese dies in Chennai
Prof Varghese had a postgraduate degree in soil mechanics from the Harvard University in the United States and another in reinforced concrete design from the London Imperial College.

Chennai: Soil specialist, author and former professor at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Kharagpur and Madras, P C Varghese passed away at his residence in Adayar. He was 97.

The funeral will be at the Kilpauk Cemetery in Chennai at 3:30 pm. Prof Varghese, who had a postgraduate degree in soil mechanics from the Harvard University in the United States and another in reinforced concrete design from the London Imperial College, had also worked at the Moratuwa University in Sri Lanka. He also served as chief technical adviser to the UNESCO at Moratuwa. He had authored many books on civil engineering.

Prof (Dr) Varghese is from the Puthenveettil family in Mavelikkara. His wife Achamma Varghese was the daughter of K V Koshy of the Kandathil family. Children: Dr P V Alexander, Moly George, Dr Sarah Thomas, Prof Koshy Varghese. Children in-law: Radha Alex, K. George (Raju – visiting professor at Kottayam Saintgits College of Engineering), Dr Thomas Alexander (Cardiologist, Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital, Coimbatore), and Annu Varghese. The late PC Mathew, ICS, and Dr PC George are his siblings.
