Thiruvananthapuram: As the new academic year began on June 1, about 3.5 lakh children joined the class one Thursday - their first step into the competitive world of academics.

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the 'Samsthana School Pravesanolsavam, 2017', at the Government UP school, Ooruttambalam, in the capital. Education minister C. Raveendranath was also present. Total enrollment from classes I to XII is 43 lakh.

In a bid to give a boost to handloom products, the government had earlier decided to use handloom materials for school uniforms distributed among students of government-run schools.

During the district Pravesanolsavam in Idukki, Students' Federation of India workers planted black flag in front of the school.

And in Kumali, Plus Two students who did not not turn up in school uniforms were shown the door by the principal.
