Tiger skin surfaces again: forest team arrests youth, four others escape

The tiger skin with the animal's claws

Nenmara: Forest officials on Wednesday arrested one person for trying to sell a tiger skin with the animal's claws.

Four accomplices of the accused managed to escape. The arrested was identified as Anish, 28. He was reportedly the middleman and was caught by the range officer and his team. They were caught from a place near the Mahadeva temple on the Koduvayur-Kakkayoor road here.

The officials said the accused were trying to sell the hide for Rs. 2 lakh to a person in Mangalapuram. Those who managed to flee were Rishikesh, Subin, Vijeesh, and Akshay. Poaching of tigers for hide and claws had come down after sustained enforcement by 'tiger sanctuary' states in south India, namely, Kerala, tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Sources said wildlife enforces were but faced with the daunting task of combing large tracts of the forested Western Ghat forests.
