New Delhi: The Election Commission announced the dates of the legislative Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir, and Haryana on Friday. The election in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in three phases. The first phase is scheduled for September 18, the second on September 25, and the third on October 1. The counting of votes will take place on October 4.
This marks the first assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir in a decade. The last assembly election was held in 2014 when a coalition government was formed by the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Union Territory has a total of 8.709 million voters, including 4.26 million women, spread across 90 constituencies and 11,838 polling stations.
In Haryana, voting will be conducted in a single phase on October 1, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 4. Although it was anticipated that the election dates for Maharashtra and Jharkhand would be announced, they were not. The date for the by-election in Kerala has also not been declared. The Election Commission has visited Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana recently to oversee the poll preparedness but is yet to visit Maharashtra.
