A unique disease dubbed 'Dinga dinga' is spreading in Uganda. More than three hundred persons have reportedly sought treatment for it until now. Meanwhile, the disease has mostly affected women and young girls in the Bundibungyo province of the country. The name of the disease translates to 'shaking like dancing' in the local dialect of the region. The district health officer of the region said that the patients are being treated with antibiotic doses. Health officials warn against self-treatment and urge people to seek medical treatment if they show any symptoms. They have been reassuring the people in the province that patients could recover in a week with proper treatment. However, the authorities do not know the origin of the disease or how the virus has spread. Meanwhile, samples have been collected from the patients for further investigation.
Symptoms of 'Dinga dinga'
Dinga dinga patients reportedly exhibit similar symptoms seen in those affected by the ‘dancing plague’ in 1518 Strasbourg, France. Dancing plague got its name as the people with this disease danced uncontrollably and unwillingly for days. The health department has issued advisories asking people to be alert against the new disease. Here are some of the symptoms:
1) Fever, headache, cough, runny nose and body pain
2) A feeling of paralysis
3) Extreme weakness
