Shijesh and Ramya’s 4.7-cent plot tucked into a corner at Vidyanagar in Kasaragod, Kerala, had thrown quite a few challenges at the design team. After leaving the legal setback, the structure had to be built in just 2.5 cents. The design team had been able to overcome the spatial limitations of the plot through smart designing and excellent space management. The elevation features a tropical modern style to suit the small plot. Meanwhile, the full-length jali on the outer wall is an interesting element that lets in ample sunshine and air while ensuring privacy.
Designed in 2100 sqft, this cosy abode has a sit-out, living area, dining space, courtyard, kitchen with a work area, and three bedrooms. The interiors look so vaster that you hardly feel the house stands on such a tiny plot. Even the bedrooms are quite spacious with all the necessary facilities.
The spaces have been arranged to suit the unique layout of the plot that faces north. For instance, the bedrooms are built on the east side where the harsh noon sunrays do not fall. Meanwhile, lots of heat-resistant double-layered glass windows line the walls to welcome cool air and sunlight.
The entrance door opens to the hall with a double-height ceiling where the living-dining-kitchen space has been arranged. The open theme ensures that the interiors look and feel incredibly spacious. The ‘L’ shaped dining table is arranged around the double-height courtyard, adding a touch of contemporary sophistication. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor and one bedroom on the upper floor. These bedrooms are bath-attached and have wardrobes for storage.
The kitchen opens to the dining area and has cabinets done in plywood with a laminate finish. An adjacent work area too has been added as part of the kitchen. The family is incredibly proud of their ‘space-optimised’ house on 2.5 cents that manages to impress their friends and relatives.
