English style mansion in Kottayam, a landmark exuberance in home architecture

Shiju and Jiji of Kerala dreamed of an abode endowed with architectural aesthetics that is unique and matchless. And they built a house at Thottackad in Kottayam, Kerala with an enchanting theme and luxurious features. The mansion that sprawls in 10,000 sqft stands in a lavish 40 cents land. The house features a ‘dark’ theme which combines a fusion of earthy tones. The structure doesn’t have a sit-out or a veranda, and the natural stone-clad walls in the front aren’t painted either. Bangalore stones and box-cut cobblestones have been used in the landscape to complement the elevation. Meanwhile, the garage has been built behind the house.

It is quite risky building houses that feature Western designer elements in Kerala due to the tropical weather here. So, a few compromises have been made in the designs like adding rain shades and projections to suit the weather pattern in Kerala.

The huge arch-shaped entrance door instantly grabs the attention for its grandeur and elegance. Tinted natural stone claddings have been paved around the entrance door. The formal living area is adorned with custom-made furniture pieces to match the theme of the house. Meanwhile, a partition wall has been added to ensure privacy in the family living area. Wooden planks are paved on the floor in all the common areas in the house.

Furniture in similar designs has been arranged in the family living area to grant a classy uniform look. A modern version of the fireplace that was commonly seen in ancient English bungalows in the high ranges has been added here too. From here, you can enter the balcony which is covered in glass.

The dining-kitchen area is designed in an open theme. Meanwhile, the eight-seater dining table with the black quartz table top is a fabulous piece of furniture that adds chic glamour to the dining area. Besides, the countertop of the show kitchen has been paved with black quartz. The cabinets here are done in plywood laminate finish. Interestingly, the work area has been built as a ‘secret’ chamber adjacent to the kitchen area. You would hardly realise that there is a door on the cabinet wall.

The grand spiral staircase that connects the four floors of the house is a major highlight in the interiors. Granite steps have been built on the RCC frame while the hand railings are done in GI. The interiors, though designed in the ‘dark’ theme, enjoy an ample supply of natural sunshine and cool air.

Two bedrooms each have been arranged on all the floors. The bedrooms that feature unique designer elements boast incredibly luxurious facilities. Full-length mirrors, attached bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes are some of the amenities here.

The owners, who are expatriates, are proud that their dream dwelling instil a sense of awe in everyone. Meanwhile, the English-style lighting grants a spectacular ambience to the exteriors. Lots of people often come here to see the house and enjoy its mesmerizing splendour.
