Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian science of architecture and design that aims to balance and harmonize the energies in a given space. It's based on the concept that the physical environment around us affects our well-being, happiness, and success.

'Kannimoola' (south-west corner), a significant aspect of Vaastu is a nightmare in Kerala for many. Thousands of toilets in the south-west corners of houses have been demolished. Today, 90 per cent of 'Kannimoola' spots in Kerala are toilet-free.

It is the most suitable place for the head of the family. Scientifically, there should be no bathroom in this place where wind and light are available properly. In the old days, there were no bathrooms attached to the house or in any corner of the house. There were only toilets which were called 'Ovara' (out-houses).

There is a reason why Vaastu Shastra says that there should be no toilets, etc. in the corners of the house. In those days there were no lintels, belts, or slabs. Due to this, if the presence of water increases, the corners become weak and the building stands the chance of collapsing. That is why Vaastu Shastra advises against the presence of water in corners.

If we look beyond such intricacies, we can see that Vaastu Shastra is both a scientific and spiritual expression of culture, technology, and the environment, and also a complete vision of human habitation.
