Heating milk can be tricky, especially when it sticks to the bottom of the pan, leaving behind a scorched mess. But with a few simple techniques, you can avoid this frustrating kitchen problem. From adjusting your heat to using the right kind of pan, here’s how to keep your milk smooth and burn-free every time.

Low to medium heat
If the milk is sticking to bottom, chances are high you have put it on high flame. Always heat milk slowly over low to medium heat. High heat causes it to scald quickly, making it more likely to stick and burn.

Stir frequently
Stirring the milk constantly while heating ensures that it doesn't settle at the bottom and form a sticky layer. Use a wooden spoon or a silicone spatula to scrape the bottom regularly.

Rinse with water first
Before pouring milk into the pan, rinse the pan with cold water. The thin layer of water acts as a barrier, reducing the chances of milk sticking to the surface.

Use a heavy-bottomed pan
A thick or heavy-bottomed pan distributes heat more evenly, preventing hot spots that can cause the milk to stick and burn.

Add a small amount of water
If you're heating milk for recipes like tea or coffee, adding a small amount of water to the pan before pouring in the milk can help reduce sticking.

Non-stick or stainless steel pans
Using non-stick pans can further minimize sticking. Stainless steel pans are also effective if combined with the above methods.
