Paavada music review: One song joy

Prithviraj in still from 'Paavada'. On right is the movie's music director Aby Tom Cyriac.

Music director: Aby Tom Cyriac

Lyrics (first two songs): Harinarayanan BK

Paavada is Malayalam's star-in-form Prithviraj's next movie gearing up for its release. Directed by G. Marthandan, the movie is music programmer-turned-composer Aby Tom Cyriac's second film as music director. His first movie was Second Innings, which never saw the light, says a Wikipedia page on the musician. He had also scored the music for Moonnamidam, a short film starring Rachana Narayanankutty and Rj Shaan , produced by actor Jayasurya.

And, here we plug in our earphones to this three-song soundtrack of Paavada.

Kuruthakedinte Koodane (Jayasurya)

A fun song on a drunkard named Joy (Prithviraj, presumably) and Aby Tom has got actor Jayasurya to sing it. The actor has already proved that he can do a neat job as a singer with a couple of songs to his credit. He fits the bill here too. The entertaining violin, trumpet and saxophone work big time in favour of the tune. The chorus is in charge of the the build-up and 'punchline' of the song, 'nammude muthaanu Joy', which is foot-tapping worthy. The chorus portion before the second stanza where 'Joy' quirkily makes way for 'enjoy' is very likeable. Thumbs up to Kuruthakedinte Koodane, overlooking the retching noise in the end.

Paavam Paavada (KG Ranjith)

A fast number that rides on heavy percussions, its plain tune does not excite the listeners. Ranjith does a fine job as the singer, the arrangement has the stamp of quality and that's about it. The violin tries its best to impress, but there is nothing much in 'paavam paavada' that is captivating.

Ihalokaveevitham (Nedumudi Venu)

It's the typical booze song of the album and in another popular actor's voice. Nedumudi Venu leads the vocals in Aby Tom's version of the folk song. Backing the singers are simple percussion, whistles and claps, keeping with the spirit of the song. Those who have heard the song earlier would enjoy watching this one on the big screen.

Anoop Menon, Maniyanpilla Raju, Prithviraj and Nedumudi Venu in 'Paavada'.

Verdict

Kuruthakedinte Koodane easily becomes the pick of this very short album of Paavada, and Aby Tom Cyriac shows promise in that particular song. The second track is a passable one and the folk song is enjoyable if you are in the mood to sing along.
