Kottayam: A teenager, originally hailing from Kottayam and is now settled in Australia along with her family, is capturing hearts and attention worldwide with her amazing singing talent, by becoming the first Indian girl to win the Blind Audition of the famous reality show ‘The Voice Australia 2023’. 20-year-old Charlette Ginu, daughter of Ginu Jacob of Vaniyapurakkal in Kottayam and his wife Sincy Jacob, took part in the popular reality show along with 47 others. The participants had been selected from over half a lakh applicants.
The teenager’s superlative performance on the Blind Audition stage has taken the internet by storm. Wearing a red saree, she crooned the song ‘Lean On’ by DJ Snake and Major Laser by combining it with a few voice notes of her own. Charlette has been learning classical and Carnatic music for the past 12 years. She is the disciple of well-known Carnatic musician Dr Vellinezhi Subramaniam while she learns light music from Sajitha Binu.
The young superstar is also attending classes in Western Music, besides learning various dance forms such as Bharatanatyam, Hip Hop, Bollywood, and Tamizh Kuthu. Charlette is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in Speech and Hearing at McQuarrie University in Sydney. Her father Ginu is with the Australian Postal Service while her mother Sincy works as a nurse. Her sister, Shantel, is a law student.
What is Blind Audition?
In a Blind Audition, the judges listen to the participants with their chairs turned around to not see them. The identity of the performer is concealed from the judges to prevent bias. The judges gradually turn towards the candidates as they perform and if they do not turn around, the candidate will not enter the next round.
