Coimbatore: Tamil actor Silambarasan aka Simbu appeared at the Race Course Police station here on Monday, in connection with a case related to the 'Beep song' controversy.

Simbu will be produced in the Coimbatore court later on Monday. The Coimbatore police had earlier sent notice to Simbu to appear in person in connection with the case.

The controversial 'Beep song' written and composed by Anirudh Ravichander and sung by Simbu had sparked a row after it went viral on the social media.

The song has beep sounds in place of vulgar words in the lyrics. The song, which was composed in secrecy, was allegedly uploaded on social media by some miscreants and went viral on the internet.

Various womens rights organisations jumped into action, alleging that the song was misogynistic and also contained terms insulting women. The song invited vehement protests from various quarters as well.

The police filed a case against actor Simbu and Aniruddh on the basis of a complaint filed by Janadhipathya Mahila Association, a women's organisation. As many as 10 cases have been filed so far against Simbu and Aniruddh in relation with the song.

Simbu's lawyer had earlier said that the original version of the song without the beeps would be released, if required. He had also maintained that some miscreants were responsible for leaking the incomplete song which had many dummy words in it and that Simbu is innocent.

If convicted, Simbu may attract up to three years' jail sentence.
