After winning big at Kerala State Film Awards this year, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s movie Chola has made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Ahead of the screening, the Chola team was seen on the red carpet posing for shutterbugs. Joju made it an occasion to flaunt the spirit of Kerala by sporting shirt and mundu while Nimisha slayed it in a golden saree.
Apart from the lead actors, director Sanal and actor Ashwin were present at the red carpet.
According to a ScreenDaily report, Chola has been touted as a magic-realist drama that "follows two teenagers who run away to visit the big city, but end up having to spend the night in a bare-bones motel, where their nightmare begins."
Chola has been selected for this year’s Venice Film Festival as part of the ‘Orizzonti’ (Horizons) competition category, which runs parallel to the main competition. This special competitive section at the festival, dedicated to new currents in world cinema, was launched in 2004.
Earlier, before the screening, Sanal spoke about the movie. “It is a look into people’s mindset, how they react differently in peculiar situations, at times against all our expectations. The film studies such situations and our judgments in those times,” he said.
Chola had won the Best Actress Award for Nimisha Sajayan, the Best Character Actor Award for Joju George and special Jury mentions for direction and sound designing at the Kerala State Film Awards 2018.
This is not the first time Sanal’s movie is getting big appreciation at international film festivals. His last flick S Durga had become the first Indian film to win the Hivos Tiger award at the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2017.
The Venice Film Festival is being held from August 28 to September 7.
