Many students in India aspire to pursue higher studies and research in the US. However, the procedures for gaining admission to American universities and the academic environment differ significantly from those in India.

For instance, nearly all applications to US universities from Indian students begin with the salutation "Dear Sir." However, in the US, addressing faculty as "Sir" is considered improper; instead, they should be addressed by their surname, explained Dr. Jayan Thomas during a guidance program on higher education in the US recently organized by 'Malayala Manorama Career Guru' and the SCMS Group of Educational Institutions in Kalamassery, Kochi.

"Indian students often use 'Sir' to refer to a teacher or official due to British influence," Dr Thomas noted. "But in the US, it’s appropriate to address someone of authority as 'Dear Professor Thomas' or 'Dear Doctor Thomas,' where 'Thomas' is the surname. I am 'Dr. Thomas,' not 'Dr. Jayan,'" he elaborated.

Indian students must correct several such misconceptions and myths when applying to American universities, said Dr. Thomas, a Professor and researcher in the Department of Optics and Photonics at the College of Engineering, University of Central Florida.

Originally from Kanjirappara in Kottayam, Dr. Thomas is visiting Kerala to conduct awareness programs on education as a recipient of the Fulbright Specialist Program awarded by the US.

Important considerations

Students aspiring to study in the US should be aware of the following:

Payment: Applicants should not pay money to anyone except the university or college where they intend to enrol.

Institution ranking: Check the ranking of both the institution and the specific course before applying. A university might have a high overall ranking, while a particular course may not. Authentic ranking data is available on websites like US News and World Report (www.usnews.com).

Location and environment: Applications should be submitted only after considering the university's location, local climate, and accommodation facilities. Always apply directly to the institution.

Admission seasons: There are three admission seasons in the US each year: Fall (August-September), Spring (January-February), and Summer (May-August).

Research universities: When applying to research universities, choose those with Carnegie Classification R1, as these institutions conduct advanced research.

Academic system

  • Undergraduate Programs (BS): Typically four years in duration, with a minimum of 120 credits.
  • Graduate Programs (MS): Usually two years, requiring 30-36 credits.
  • Doctoral Programs (PhD): These take between three to six years, with 72-90 credits required.
  • Post-Doctoral Studies: Can be pursued subsequently.

The importance of the admission essay
An essay is a crucial part of the application process for US universities. The information in the essay should be factual and presented in a narrative style, including the applicant's experiences and thoughts, without straying from the main topic.

Avoid clichés and stock phrases. The essay should primarily introduce the applicant and can include their cultural background. Before submission, it’s advisable to have teachers or advisors review the essay for necessary corrections.

Scholarships
American universities offer scholarships and financial aid to students. Applicants should check their eligibility for such support. Besides universities and colleges, various organizations also provide scholarships.
