Kottayam: As many as 5706 seats are lying vacant as the admission process to first-year degree courses run by the arts and sciences-aided colleges under the MG University has been completed. Most seats lying vacant are with regard to the science stream, with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as the main subjects.
There are a total of 16,358 seats in colleges under the varsity, located across five districts. Out of these, 51 colleges have reported vacant seats. The maximum number of vacant seats are in colleges in Kottayam—2,675 seats in 20 colleges. Below are the figures relating to vacant seats in other districts: Kochi: 1,017; Pathanamthitta: 1,158; Idukki: 747; and Alappuzha: 109 seats (only one college).
The list includes self-financing degree courses as well. The students migrating to other states and abroad for higher education is the main reason why many seats were lying vacant, as pointed out during the Syndicate-Senate meeting the other day.
Some of the students who secured admission to degree programs, opting for medical, engineering, and similar courses, have also turned out to be a setback. Other students were unable to apply to these seats with the admissions period getting over. A total of 1,263 seats with respect to post-graduation courses in the aided colleges are also lying vacant.
