Ever since the news on hospitality chain OYO deciding to 'ban' unmarried couples has been out, discussions have been going on about the rights and wrongs of its new check-in policy. Many youngsters, who travel with their partners and friends, often depend on OYO rooms nationwide for budget accommodation. According to reports, the new check-in policy restricts unmarried couples from booking hotels that partner with them. The latest policy will be implemented in Meerut before being launched in other cities. However, here's what the policy actually state:

What's does the new policy say?
Earlier, OYO's partner hotels couldn't say no to couples, whether they were married or not. However, the new policy states that the partner hotels would have the discretionary right to decline couple bookings based on regional and social sensibilities. In hotels that want to entertain only married couples, guests should present valid documents to prove the relationship between them. The documents are also mandatory for online bookings. OYO has directed its partner hotels in Meerut to implement the new check-in policies. Meanwhile, based on feedback, the policy would reportedly be expanded to other cities.

Why the new policy?
Many civil society groups and residents of Meerut had urged OYO to stop giving rooms to unmarried couples. The hospitality provider made changes to its check–in policies based on this feedback. “While we respect individual freedom and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and work with the law enforcement and civil society groups in our micro markets. We will continue to review this policy and its impact periodically,” said Pawas Sharma, regional head of OYO North India.
