New Delhi: Sri Lankan foreign minister Vijitha Herath recently said that the island nation was ready to launch e–visa facilities for Indian tourists. In an interaction with India Foundation, Herath, accompanying President Anura Dissanayake on a diplomatic visit to India, said that Sri Lanka will issue the gazette notification that grants e–visa to citizens of 39 countries, including India, in January. Lots of tourists from around the world had been visiting Sri Lanka before the Easter Day bombings in 2018.
The number of tourists further declined due to the Covid outbreak and the severe political unrest in the country. The foreign minister expressed hope that more Indians will visit Sri Lanka when the e-visa is launched. Meanwhile, he remarked that building a bridge to India could be contemplated if both countries are interested.
Herath also reiterated the President’s claim that Sri Lanka wouldn’t engage in any activities that could threaten India’s security. The explanation was given in light of growing concerns about former governments allowing Chinese warships and defence research ships to dock in Sri Lankan ports.
