Kollam: Kerala is set to launch 10 new Vande Bharat trains, also known as Namo Bharat, across the state. Known for their comfort and efficiency, these modern, air-conditioned trains are designed for inter-city travel at speeds of up to 130 km/h. They come equipped with amenities like automatic sliding doors and CCTV cameras for enhanced security.

These Vande Bharat trains will provide tourists visiting Kerala with the opportunity to explore the state’s natural beauty and rich culture while travelling across a variety of destinations. The trains, which have revolutionised short-distance travel in India, are celebrated for their speed, modern facilities, and eco-friendly electric engines. Their arrival in Kerala promises smoother, faster travel options that align with the state’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

The addition of these services is expected to uplift Kerala’s tourism sector substantially. In addition to offering an improved travel experience, the trains will enhance connectivity to lesser-known destinations, enabling travellers to discover hidden gems across the state.

Key routes and stops
Out of the ten new services, two trains will begin operations from Kollam, heading to Thirunelveli and Thrissur. Plans are in place to extend the Thrissur route to the temple town of Guruvayur. Additional routes will connect Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam and Guruvayur to Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

This expanded network is anticipated to stimulate local economies, drawing tourists to regions previously off the beaten path and supporting local businesses and services.

Tourism potential for Kollam
Kollam, renowned for its coastline, backwaters, hills, and forests, is set to benefit significantly from these new train services. Railway officials have highlighted the tourism potential that the new Vande Bharat routes will bring to the region. In addition to the Kollam-Thrissur and Kollam-Thirunelveli routes, the Guruvayur-Madurai and Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram trains will have brief stopovers in Kollam.

Trains bound for Thirunelveli and Madurai will traverse the scenic Kottarakkara-Punalur-Thenmala-Aryankavu route, passing through the historic Kollam-Shenkottai line. This route, with origins dating back to the colonial era, takes passengers through dense forests, tunnels, and pristine landscapes, offering access to attractions such as the Thenmala Dam, Palaruvi Waterfalls, and Rosemala village.

Infrastructure needs
However, infrastructure limitations at smaller stations remain a challenge, as many currently cannot accommodate Vande Bharat trains. Adding stops at stations like Thenmala could enhance tourism in the Thenmala-Aryankavu region. Presently, only MEMU and passenger trains stop along the Shenkottai route.

Stopovers at smaller stations for these new trains could support regional development and tourism. Another area with high tourism potential is Manrothuruthu, an island located at the confluence of the Kallada River and Ashtamudi backwaters.

Situated on the Kollam-Kayamkulam railway route, this destination already attracts many visitors, including international tourists. A Vande Bharat stopover here could encourage even more travellers to explore this unique area.

Train design and efficiency
Designed for efficient inter-city travel, Namo Bharat trains are similar to Metro services, with in-built systems that enable quick acceleration, high speeds, and prompt stops. Analyses have shown that adding stops at smaller stations would minimally impact the overall efficiency of these services. The trains are also well-suited for distances of 100 to 250 kilometres, offering an efficient option for regional connectivity.

Ticket fares and travel options
Indian Railways has announced fare structures for the Vande Bharat trains, with a minimum ticket price of Rs 30, inclusive of GST. Season tickets, ranging from one week to a month, are also available. Monthly tickets offer travel for the cost of 20 single journeys, providing value for frequent travellers. For example, the fare for the Bhuj to Ahmedabad route is priced at Rs 430, excluding GST.

With the support of local representatives, these trains could further increase accessibility to Kollam’s tourist highlights, including the scenic Ashtamudi, Sasthamkotta, and Paravur backwaters, as well as its renowned beaches. The introduction of Vande Bharat trains is anticipated to significantly boost tourism, providing locals and visitors alike with expanded travel opportunities across Kerala’s diverse landscapes.
