Thiruvananthapuram: Senior citizens aged above 70 will soon be able to enjoy free travel in KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) buses in Thiruvananthapuram city, thanks to an initiative launched by the City Corporation to boost its image before the local body, scheduled to take place in December next year. Under the scheme, the City Corporation will meet the ticket fares of passengers above 70 years from its own fund. The City Corporation has officially sought the necessary clearance from the Local Self-Government Department, and if approval is granted, the initiative will take off in December this year.

The scheme is part of a plan to turn Thiruvananthapuram into an elderly-friendly city. Beneficiaries of the scheme will receive a travel card from the City Corporation which they can use to travel in any KSRTC bus in the city. These passengers will be given regular tickets during journeys without making any payment. Under the proposed agreement between the City Corporation and KSRTC, the ticket fares would be paid monthly from the former’s own fund to the latter.
