Kumarakom: Kerala’s Responsible Tourism Mission has announced a host of innovative rural tourism packages to attract more travellers to the western parts of Kottayam district. The packages, being implemented along with hotels, resorts and tour operators in Kumarakom, are aimed at familiarizing tourists with the rich culture of the area as well as providing facilities to enjoy the picturesque scenery.

The new plans were formulated after a visit to the area by Dr Harold Goodwin, an advisor to the World Travel Market and founder of ICRT (International Centre for Responsible Tourism) during August last. He had evaluated the developmental activities and new trends in the tourism sector during the visit.

Village tourism

Under this initiative, the agricultural area at Kumarakom and Aymanam will be converted into a Farm Tourism Hub. A cultural centre will also be set up to promote traditional artists.

Street project

To be implemented at Manchira in Aymanam, this project focuses on traditional lifestyles and village tourism. Under the project, green, cultural, food, tourism, agri-tourism, water and art streets will be set up.

Farm tourism

This plan is intended to attract visitors by promoting farm tourism and homestead farming.

Ancient temples

Tourists will be taken around the ancient temples and ‘manas’ (residences of Brahmins) in the area.

For two persons: Rs 3,000

Three-five persons: Rs 1,000 per person

Five-ten persons: Rs 900 per head

10-20 persons: Rs 750 per person

Over 20 persons: Rs 650 for each person.
