Ambitious ropeway project may soon take off in Kovalam beach

Kovalam: The ambitious ropeway project at the world renowned beach destination of Kovalam in the Kerala capital may materialise soon. The project envisages a ropeway above the beach and a part of the sea. The ropeway, to start on the lighthouse premises, would have its landing the Kovalam government guest house.

The project is conceived by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships. The initial works would start soon, sources said. DK Sinha, director-general of the department, mooted the project when he visited Kovalam to assess the construction of a musical fountain on the premises of the lighthouse. The officials would present the ropeway project to Nitin Gadkari, union minister for road transport and highways, when he visits Kovalam for the inauguration of the fountain.

The authorities said the ropeway ride would be a unique experience for the tourists. They added that the project would be environment friendly and this would prove a favorable factor for the ropeway project. The project would also include the north side of the lighthouse premise, Idakallu rock, and guest house.

The ropeway would cover two kilometers and would be connected to the towers erected in the proposed areas. The inclusion of Idakallu rock, which would increase the distance covered, will also be a favorable factor. It is hoped that the ropeway project would significantly improve the tourism scope of Kovalam.
