A splash of oars, the song of the oarsmen and the rush of adrenaline - the backwaters of Kerala will reverberate to these sounds starting July 8.

The Moolam boat race at Champakulam, that will officially set off the season of snake boat races across the state, will get under way on July 8. This year, about six snake boats and several small boats will vie for the top honors in the placid waters of the river Pamba.

This is the first of the series of boat races of the season.

This year, however, there is a difference. These snake boat races may soon dart into the league of celebrity sports if a proposal by an expert committee gets the state cabinet’s approval.

The Kerala Boat Race League proposes to integrate the scattered boat races across Kerala into a single league that starts with the Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Punnamada in Alappuzha on the second Saturday of August and culminates in a grand finale at Kottappuram in Thrissur on the second Saturday of October
