Up above the clouds: a trip to Chokramudi
Mail This Article
This is a memoir. It has been nearly three years since we scaled Chokramudi, one of the highest peaks in Kerala. Every time it rains, my mind lingers, for a couple of minutes to the sights and sounds up the hill. To the friendships forged during the ascent to the peak. The urge to the tell the story of our climb overpowers me.
It was on a rainy day that we winded up at the base camp of Chokramudi, some 25 km from Munnar. And we were told that the trek up would take us through a rough terrain of over 4 km. That, however, did not deter us.
We looked up in awe. We saw clouds drifting along. And as we started the climb, thin wisps of dew lingered on the grass.
The trek was arduous, with the mist floating down. The visibility was low at times, but we plodded on. And we were drenched by the time we reached the top of the peak even though it was not raining.
The clouds were below us, racing across the Gap road at a distance. We were greeted by trees and plants that thrive in high altitudes. The view was nothing short of spectacular. The clouds would roll in and the cool breeze would blow it away.
The trek was tough, but the memories linger. Of how we clung to the slopes of the hill, how we had to use sticks for support, of the photos we took. Needless to say that every time it rains, I yearn for another trip to the top of Chokramudi
Facts:
Chokramudi at 7200 ft is one of the tallest peaks in Kerala
The nearest places to have food is at the Gap Road or at Bison Valley.
The entrance to Chokramudi is near the Lockhart Estate on the Munnar - Poopara road.
During the months of November and December, it is very cold and the visibility drops. It is ideal not to go this time as it could be dangerous.
