The red desert in Wyoming in the United States is quite famous for its vast swathes of red hues sand. The desert that is around 12,000 years old is known for its unique flora and fauna, vegetation and amazing sights.

The Therikad desert in Tamil Nadu too has been drawing tourists for similar sights and vivid ecology.

A never-ending ocean of red sand
Therikad, a coastal region known for red sand and mud is sprawled in 12,000 acres. Scientists say that it took thousands of years for the formation of Therikad. The region, also known as Therikudiyiruppu or Kuthiramoli Theri is quite intriguing. Interestingly, Therikad looks like a never-ending ocean of red sand. Even though it is called red desert, Therikad boasts of rich and vivid ecology. The trees that were planted to prevent soil erosion has now turned it into a beautiful orchard. So, Therikad is home to various species of birds, mammals and reptiles.

Adventure activities for tourists
The sand here contains iron oxide giving it the vibrant red hue. Due to changes in weather patterns and soil erosion, the ancient figurines that had stood in this area gradually decomposed and deposited iron oxide particles in the soil. Arunjunai Katha Ayyanar temple and Karkuvel Ayyanar temple are the two major temples that stand here. Besides, lots of adventure activities have been arranged for the tourists who visit Therikad. Tourists who visit Therikad is eager to try their hands in sandboarding which is an adventure sport performed in deserts. Moreover, guided desert tours too are available for those who are interested in exploring the unique sights of Therikad. The sights of sun rise and sun set at Therikad are quite special which attracts visitors.
