Kuttanadu
The region is around 12 kms away from the Nehru Trophy Boat Race venue at Punnamada Lake. Famously known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Kerala,’ it has many picturesque paddy fields, backwater tours, coconut and cashew plantations. You can also try a hand at a traditional Kerala village walk through the simple local villages in the region. The area is also famous for its unique farming methods below sea level.
Pathiramanal Island
Just about 10 km away from the boat race venue is this serene island of Vembanad Lake. It is a haven for birdwatchers and is home to many local and migratory bird species. If you love photography, this is a perfect spot to explore.
Krishnapuram Palace
If you can take a 30-minute car ride, head to this beautiful palace, 14 km away from Punnamada. It features intricate wooden carvings and murals and can give you a perfect idea of Kerala-style architecture. It also has a museum that displays ancient artefacts, weapons, coins, and various items that belonged to royal families.
Marari Beach
Approximately 11 km from the boat race venue is the beach, which is known for its pristine shoreline, water sports, sunset views, various well-known retreats and resorts, and palm-tree-lined coastline. This is another beautiful spot for photography. You can also try the local food at the beach shacks and cafes here.
Sree Krishna Temple, Ambalappuzha
The temple is just about 14 kms from the boat race venue. If you have some time to spare between 6 am and 11 am, or 5 pm and 8 pm on the days here, head to the temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna. The palpayasam, the special offertory pudding at the temple, is a must-try.
