Rains have enhanced the beauty of the Thooval waterfalls near Nedumkandam in Idukki district. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the towns, this is the only waterfall of its kind in the district that can be viewed and enjoyed from heights. As its beauty lies unexploited, tourists lack basic facilities which make for better footfall.
The falls stand on the borders of Nedumkandam panchayat and come coursing down from places like Manjappara and Eettithoppu. The spot can be accessed from Manjappara, Eettithoppu, or Ezhukumvayal. A major drawback at present is the lack of good roads that lead up to the waterfall. One has to walk through farmlands for a distance of about 2 km before descending down to Thoovalaruvi, the stream into which the milky foam of the waterfalls come crashing down. The Thooval falls to take a step by step course before they merge with the stream. Apart from this major waterfall, there's another one too that lies wedged between the rocks.
Both the falls flow into the Chinnar and the Periyar. If the place is given the right attention, it can be a major tourist attraction. Tourists are sure to enjoy the walk down to the stream and a splash in the cool waters of Thoovalaruvi.
