Several people are, therefore, heading to Munnar for some much-needed respite from the heat.

The uber cool

A cool climate prevails in Munnar. The mercury dropped to zero degrees Celsius the other day. Due to the dipping temperatures, the area also witnessed small amount of snowfall. The lowest temperature was recorded at the Chendurvara Lower Division of the Kanan Devan Company. The nearby estates of Chittuvara, Yellapetty and Kundala too recorded zero degrees Celsius.

Munnar, meaning three streams, was called thus as it was meeting point of Muthirapuzha, Nala Thanni,and Kundali. Munnar is situated at the centre of Pallivasal, Devikulam, Malayoor, Mankulam, and Kutambuzha panchayats.

Ever-green tea plantations, bungalows from the colonial era, waterfalls and the cool climate attract scores of visitors to Munnar every year.

The hill station is strewn with several beautiful locales. Munnar also never disappoints those who want to go for trekking and bike rides.

Eravikulam National Park

One of the major attractions is the Eravikulam National Park, which is 15km away from Munnar. This park is known for the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered species.

Another attraction is Anamudi, which is situated inside the national park. With a height of 2,700metre, Anamudi is the tallest peak in South India. However, you would need to take special permission from the wildlife department before heading to Anamudi.

The hill town of Mattupetty is located 1,700metre above the sea level. There is a dam and beautiful lake, where the visitors can go boating. Mattupetty is 13km away from the Munnar town.

Chinnakanal

The major attraction at Chinnakanal, near Munnar, is the waterfall that is situated 2,000metre above the sea level. It is popularly known as power house waterfall.

Top station, which is 3km away from Munnar, offers one of the best viewpoints in the area. Not just Munnar, the area lets you enjoy the sights of some regions in Tamil Nadu as well. This is one of the main regions where Neela Kurinji blooms once in 12 years. Top station is located 1,700metre above the sea level.

Tea museum

Munnar also houses a museum that chronicles the evolution of tea cultivation through pictures. The museum has several photographs, equipment and handicraft.
